Ramps are usually gentler on stiff or arthritic joints because there is no jumping or climbing, which suits dogs with hip or back trouble. Steps take up less floor space and can suit smaller or more mobile dogs. Whichever you pick, choose a gentle slope and a non-slip surface.

Look for a genuine orthopedic bed with a dense, supportive foam base that does not bottom out. It should be easy to step onto, warm, and have a washable cover. Low or roll-over edges help dogs that struggle to climb in. A bed eases comfort but does not treat the arthritis itself.

Slippery floors make aging dogs nervous and can cause falls. Lay rugs or non-slip runners along their usual routes. Keep the fur between the paw pads trimmed, and consider toe grips or paw wax. Better footing often improves a dog confidence quickly.

Watch for early signs: hesitating at stairs, struggling to rise, slipping, or no longer jumping onto the sofa or into the car. Adding ramps, traction and a supportive bed early makes daily life easier and can protect joints. Check with a vet to rule out treatable problems.
